Gabriel Jesus wins Brazilian league title

IN CONTROL: Gabriel Jesus in action for Brazil against Argentina

Manchester City-bound Gabriel Jesus has helped Palmeiras to their first league title since 1994.

Cuca’s side needed one point from their final two matches to secure the title – and their 1-0 over Chapecoense on Sunday means they now have an unassailable lead in the Campeonato Brasileiro going into the final weekend of the season.

Right-back Fabiano scored the only goal of the game after 26 minutes, with Jesus playing the full 90 minutes en route to victory.

It caps a fine year for Jesus, who will move to the Etihad Stadium in January after City agreed a deal to sign him in the summer.

The 19-year-old helped Palmerias to the semi-finals of the Paulista state championship in April, before playing a key role in Brazil’s Olympic side that won gold in Rio back in August.

He was then promoted to the senior setup and has scored five goals in six games, helping them to top spot in their 2018 World Cup qualifying table.

He now has a Brazilian title to his name ahead of his dream move to City.and will be hoping his meteoric rise continues under the guidance of Pep Guardiola.

Jesus admitted last week that he may need time to adjust to English football – but says his focus is on improving his game.

“I accept that [it will be hard to find a regular starting place at City], but I'll be looking to adapt all the time and not lose my focus for a minute, because I want to go there to help the team,” he said.

“That's what's important and that is what is in my head. Whatever I can do to adapt as soon as possible I will do.

“I am dying to get over there and help Manchester as much as I can.”

Everyone at Manchester City would like to send their congratulations to Jesus on a superb achievement.
